Returning Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, rumored to be angling to be the next Senate minority leader, on Wednesday pushed for a strong, independent Senate as he was proclaimed along with 11 other senators-elect.
The former House Speaker said the Senate should cooperate with the executive on some issues but would not be afraid to call out the administration for any shortcomings.
“A strong independent Senate that will help Malacañang when it needs help, but will also correct and fiscalize when they have to be told that something is wrong is what our country needs now,” Cayetano said.
He opened his speech with a verse from Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”
But Cayetano noted that devil also had plans to steal, kill and destroy.
“Nasa kamay po nating lahat whether we will follow God’s plan for us and our beloved country, especially for the suffering millions of Filipinos, or whether we will be part of the destroying and killing,” he said.
