Race to the Senate presidency: Marcos Jr reportedly wants Sonny to lead but Angara backs Migz instead

Presumptive president Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is reportedly rooting for Senator Sonny Angara to become the next Senate President, the Politiko has learned.

Angara, however, declined to seek the top Senate post and instead threw support behind his good friend reelected Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, according to a Politiko Iskooper.

Angara is the personal choice of Marcos if the Senate presidency becomes a battle between Zubiri and him, the Iskooper added.

Zubiri, who won a second term during the recent elections, is among the reported contenders to become the next Senate President in the 19th Congress. He got 18.7 million votes in last May 9 elections.

Angara, in an online media interview, admitted that Zubiri was the first to express interest to lead the Senate. He added it was only natural for Zubiri, the Senate Majority Leader, to seek the Senate leadership. Zubiri is young and popular among colleagues in the Upper Chamber, he added.

The other reported contenders for the Senate leadership are Senator Cynthia Villar and Senator Sherwin Gatchalian.
