The Kabataan party-list group expressed belief that the call of President Rodrigo Duterte to abolish the party-list system could be a ploy to wipe out the genuine opposition in the House of Representatives.

While the outgoing president cites longstanding flaws in the party-list system, the Kabataan said Duterte “acts like a swindler by offering a deceptive solution that does not solve the problem of ensuring genuine representation of the marginalized.”

“If the problem is the partylist system, why overhaul the entire Constitution? We would only be opening up a Pandora’s box of constitutional revisions that will support the self-serving agenda of a ruling class supermajority: allowing 100% foreign ownership of resources, allowing term extensions, and wiping out any genuine opposition in Congress, among others,” said Kabataan in a statement.

Kabataan party-list alongside other legislators in the Makabayan bloc previously proposed the Genuine Partylist Group and Nominee Act (House Bill 8524) in a bid “to uphold the rationale of the party-list system as an avenue for the representation of marginalized sectors.”
