WARSAW – Top officials of the governments of Poland and Sweden are slated to meet here on Thursday, May 5, to spearhead an international donors’ conference to provide humanitarian support to Ukraine.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki of Poland and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson are organizing the Donors’ Conference in partnership European Council President Charles Michel and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

The launching of the international initiative coincides with the visit to Manila of a ranking Ukrainian diplomat on May 5 for a series of meetings.

In Warsaw, the funding drive will be convened at the Heads of State and Government level, with the participation of global business and financial institutions’ representatives. The conference will initiate a series of aid events for war-ravaged Ukraine in the upcoming months.

According to a statement released by the Embassy of Poland in Manila, the intiative aims to raise funds for Ukraine’s growing humanitarian needs

Poland and Sweden want to encourage their partners to jointly respond to the difficult humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

Following Russian aggression, there are civilian casualties, organized forced deportations, and the financial situation of millions of people is constantly deteriorating.

Both Poland and Sweden emphasizd the need for “real solidarity” to effectively support Ukrainian society.

According to the UN, 13 million people living in Ukrainian territory are in need of vital humanitarian aid; including shelter, food and medical supplies.

“It is therefore essential to mobilize immediate international aid for Ukraine, which currently covers less than 15 percent of that which is needed,” read the statement.
